I have an old newspaper photo from the Cleveland Plain Dealer on my desk at home showing a somewhat overwhelmed-looking 3-year-old boy standing behind a 1934 Ford sedan holding a toy car of his own. The caption explains how that little boy’s father had just purchased that 1934 Ford sedan at the auction where the photo was taken, and that it was the father’s first-ever antique car. If you’re a regular reader, you’ve probably guessed that the little boy is me, the car is my father’s 1934 Ford that started the two of us in the collector car hobby, and the date was sometime in July of 1973. My father knew nothing of old cars and couldn’t have imagined what he was getting himself into. He just liked how that old Ford looked. When this 1934 Ford tudor sedan showed up, I was instantly transported back 35 years to that day, and to the many fun hours thereafter spent in that neat old Ford. In fact, I invited my father to visit Best of Show this afternoon just to see this car, and we ate lunch reminiscing about that car, both of us regretting that it was “the one that got away.” It was an absolutely fantastic hobby car in every single way—reliable, quick enough to keep up with modern traffic, big enough for the entire family, and incredibly stylish. Will anyone argue with me that 1934 was a banner year for Ford designers? This very nice 1934 Ford tudor sedan has had a modest restoration sometime in the past, but was clearly never destined to be a trailer queen. Instead, it is a super-clean and functional driver with great paint and a gorgeous original-style interior. Of course, it’s black with black fenders, Henry Ford’s favorite color scheme, and it is in very presentable condition today. The wheels and pinstripe are Tacoma Cream, which is a nice compliment to the tan cloth interior. The body work was done to a good standard several years ago, and it has aged well. A few of the friction points such as the hood latch mechanisms have some wear, but overall—especially for a black car—it looks fantastic. The doors are flat and wave-free, the fenders are solid, and the paint is glossy. The fabric insert for the top is in excellent condition with no signs of tears, rips, or shrinkage. Up front, you’ll find those great-looking stainless steel Ford headlights augmented by a pair of aftermarket driving lights that were a period accessory. The bumpers front and rear have been re-chromed, and the bumper guards are correct (I seem to recall that our ’34 had the wrong ones and the correct ones were virtually impossible to find). The single horn is under the driver’s side headlight and works properly, as do the dual taillights, with the driver’s side also sporting a clear lens to light the license plate. Some of the glass has been replaced, but I have a hunch the glass in the doors is original and it’s in very good condition with little delamination and bubbling. And that gorgeous 1934 grille is in excellent condition from top to bottom with no bent bars. Mechanically, this tudor still runs an original style flathead engine. Because Ford never really matched engine and frame numbers, we can’t say for certain whether it is a numbers matching car, but on these it doesn’t really matter. It’s a correct 221 cubic inch early 21-stud flathead with what I believe are factory replacement cast iron heads (casting 68-6050B with a tag marked 10-19-45 on the driver’s side and 68-6049B with a tag marked 6-13-45 on the passenger’s side).

As one of its most contemporary and dramatic front-engine, two-seat, fastback supercars, this running prototype reaches closer to reality with a 605-horsepower, 390-cubic-inch, all-aluminum V-10 engine, a road-tested version of the Ford GT suspension and a stunning new polished-aluminum body.
Ford took the occasion of the world’s foremost showcase of automotive splendor, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, to unveil the Ford Shelby GR-1 concept, calling the new sports car a salute to “performance art.”
The Ford Shelby GR-1 is a uniquely emotional American sports car design that makes a bold statement about Ford’s performance future.
“The Ford Shelby Cobra concept was a small step in our plans for the Ford GT supercar architecture and our relationship with Carroll Shelby,” says J Mays, Ford Motor Company group vice president of Global Design. “And the Ford Shelby GR-1 is a giant leap toward the future.”
The GR-1 concept takes the performance car genre in a new direction combining modern sculptured surfaces in a sleek muscular fastback design. The result is a forward-looking supercar with attention grabbing Ford presence and Carroll Shelby inspiration.

More than 42 years after their original agreement to produce performance cars, Ford Motor Company and Carroll Shelby are back together producing production and concept cars. Shelby, a former race car driver and creator of numerous collectable performance cars returned to collaboration with Ford in the design of the 2005 Ford GT, which goes on sale this summer.
Shelby worked closely with the Ford Design team and Advanced Product Creation group to develop the Ford Shelby Cobra concept car. In addition, Shelby will produce a high-performance, limited edition, Shelby Ford Expedition, for sale through select dealers next year.
Design
Racing inspired and wholly modern in design, this show car builds on the success of the Ford Shelby Cobra concept – the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) “Best in Show” winner – and reinforces Ford’s on-going commitment to performance excellence.
The Ford Shelby GR-1 concept is a sinewy, athletic design with a dramatic front engine proportion. The long hood blends seamlessly into the teardrop-shaped cabin while the dramatic fenders dart rearwards into curvaceous haunches thrusting the car forward and enhancing the aggressive stance and width.
The car looks as if it is in motion, even when standing still. The optimized wheel arches and compact overhangs define the dramatic proportion while the sensual surfaces express the car’s athletic nature. A chiseled physique is achieved with sheer and full surfaces working together, interfacing one another in harmonious lines such as the strong shoulder line orbiting the car’s form.
The front of the GR-1 is dominated by an impressive air intake aperture and air flow splitter, directing cooling air into the engine bay and wheel wells, while air vents on the top surface of the hood exhaust hot air from the radiator.
The V10 engine pushes unashamedly upwards into the hood’s surface exposing prominent bulges – a potent reminder of the car’s powerful performance – while air vents at the base of the front screen allow the motor to breathe. Intakes and vents perforate the body side and Kamm tail, further exhausting hot air out of the vehicle.
The front corners of the GR-1 are dominated by the front wheel well and trapezoidal HISS (high intensity solid state) and LED headlamps. The distinctive Kamm tail, a strong concave section, is further defined by the bold vertical tail lights at the rear.
A visor-like side glass graphic gives a hint of the dramatic motion of the butterfly-hinged doors.
The race-inspired, ultimate high performance, Ford Shelby GR-1 is the next chapter in a long line of emotionally-charged Ford supercar concepts.
Building Another Showstopper
Ford worked closely with Carroll Shelby to develop the Ford Shelby Cobra concept for the 2004 North American International Auto Show. The show car was the brainchild of Ford’s Advanced Product Creation Group, engineered in Michigan and designed in California, a partnership which is charged with developing future car concepts and technologies with an eye toward production possibilities. The group used the Ford GT architecture and fully engineered the Ford Shelby Cobra concept. For demonstration purposes, two chassis were ordered for the Cobra concept, but only one show car was built.
Before body panels were even created, the fully-operational running chassis was test-driven at high speeds at Ford’s Dearborn Proving Ground. So pleased were Ford officials with the concept’s chassis that they took the extra demonstration chassis and went to work on another concept before the Ford Shelby Cobra concept was unveiled in January.
The Ford Shelby Cobra and its predecessor, the Ford GT were hits of the two previous North American International Auto Shows. The Ford Design team was challenged to follow-up with another exciting concept.
The Designer
In the Irvine Advanced Design Studio, George Saridakis, a young designer, new to Ford in 2000, was known for his contributions in executing the details of some of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury’s latest production and concept designs.
Saridakis created a sketch that caught the attention of the Irvine team and resonated with Mays.
“George produced this completely resolved sketch – the best I’ve seen in 10 years,” says Mays. “When I saw it, it wasn’t a matter of ‘Let’s do more sketches.’ It was really more of a ‘Let’s get this into clay.’”

Remarkably, only the original sketch of the car, in three perspectives, was created.
“George nailed it in one crack,” Mays opines. “This is a designer so masterful at visualizing every aspect of the car and its story that it literally flowed out of his pen. And because the design is so pure, we really believe this show car will be a hit.”

For 1970, it underwent a minor restyle, with single headlamps inside the grille and simulated air intakes at the front and a new rear end. According to Kevin Marti, there were 3,959 Mustangs built in 1970 with the 428 Cobra Jet engine and these are amongst the most sought after of all big blocks, combining bags of style with shattering performance. History A very special car, this matching numbers 1970 Mach 1 is one of only 320 built with the desirable 428 Cobra Jet and factory four-speed gearbox specification, as detailed in the Marti report and the verification reports that accompany the vehicle.

Mickey Thomson shows us what you can do with a classic cars, given talent and persistence. The engine in 1967 when the 390 and was the best engine Ford could come up with. Inside, restyled all new flight deck for 1969 with a twin pod dashboard, high back bucket seats with knitted vinyl, an optional fold down rear seat, a sporty clock and rich, molded door panels. It had a super slippery roof line, streamlined front end with twin set headlamps and on top.

Optional shaker hood scoop others would copy ad and in the years ahead it coined the shaker first. This was designed to familiarize us with history in an age when modifying a vintage Pony has become fashionable again. This was not built for personal expression, but to share a time in history we will likely never see again. When you stop and think about the Ford Cobra Jet Mach 1, high performance is one of the first things that comes to mind.

That is a wide selection, where you could be tailor made to suit your needs and whims. When you are out on a Saturday night around Sacramento, California, you better be wary of any black Sports Roof Mustang you roll up next to, because those little numbers on the hood scoop are hard to read. I answered multiple ads and looked at cars all over the country. The engine, a woolly 428 Cobra Jet, is the biggest thing Ford shoehorned for '68 ½ -'70, outside of the 429 Boss.

2011 Ford Start Concept Cars MEGA CITY

For parts of the world that are growing increasingly urban, the future of the automobile looks small, green, smart and fun in the eyes of Ford designers who created the Ford Start Concept. It's a design vision inspired for the transportation needs of the world's mega cities.

Making its global debut at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, the Ford Start Concept is more than simply a design exploration into the feasibility of a small car. It also demonstrates how Ford will extend the promise of its EcoBoost engine technology story even further – previewing a fuel-efficient petrol Ford EcoBoost engine with just three cylinders and 1.0 litre of displacement, yet the power of a larger, 1.6-litre I4 engine.
Start Concept was inspired in part by a growing global trend toward mass urbanisation. The world's top 20 mega-cities are home to consumers whose needs, attitudes and expectations may have more in common with mega-city dwellers in other nations than with their own countrymen. While these consumers share the challenges of living in an urban society, they also increasingly seek out product solutions that bring the best the world has to offer.
When it comes to designing eco-friendly urban transportation, automakers have tried just about everything. They've drawn up bubble cars, autonomic pods, even semi-robotic unicycles. Ford however, has decided against cribbing from the pages of a sci-fi novel and opted for something far more conventional: a three-door hatchback. Specifically, the Start concept the automaker unveiled at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show.
“Our ambition was to design a car that transcends the practical realities of commuting in these mega cities, and goes beyond just dressing the technology,” said Freeman Thomas, design director. “We wanted to design a car you would also love.”
There’s little not to love about the Start, Ford’s first concept in three years, and the first developed under the global auspices of the “One Ford” mantra. Although the Start shows traces of Ford’s “kinetic” design language, its rounded form is much more elegant. Angular edges are limited to both the shoulder lines and the slender, LED-powered headlamp and taillights. Thomas says the Start features “refined surface language” usually found on premium vehicles, and we’d agree -- from some angles, the Start almost resembles Audi’s new A1.
Function doesn’t necessarily follow form, however, as stylists made an effort to improve the car’s aerodynamics. Many surfaces, including the windshield, side window glass, and center stop lamp, are flush with the body, while an underbody aero pan further reduces the Start’s drag. The interior is as equally stylish and functional -- the floating dual-cockpit dashboard lends a sporty look, but a conceptual infotainment system, billed as “MyFord Mobile,” incorporates a multi-function touch screen to simplify the center stack.
While the Start’s form allowed Thomas’ team to flex their creative muscle, the mechanicals beneath the car are firmly rooted in reality. Ford’s teased the idea of an EcoBoost three-cylinder, but this is our first look at such an engine. The turbocharged, 1.0-liter I-3 utilizes a cast-iron block, but a cylinder head and sump fabricated from cast aluminum. Ford won’t talk power figures, saying only that early tests suggest it can produce power on par with its 1.6-liter I-4, which is rated at 120 horsepower in North America. Power is routed to the front wheels via an ordinary five-speed manual transaxle.
Created by a global team of designers working at Ford's Irvine (Calif.) Strategic Concepts Group Studios, this sporty, futuristic concept combines near-production Ford EcoBoost engine technology and slick aerodynamics in an environmentally friendly package with reduced greenhouse emissions, all wrapped in an exciting design.
Ford says the EcoBoost three-cylinder would allow the Start to emit well under 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. That’s not a crucial figure here in North America, but it is in Europe, where Ford sells the similar-sized Ka. We doubt the Start is destined for production anytime soon, but look for the turbo-three to land in some small European Fords in the near future.
“The Ford Start Concept is the first pure concept we’ve developed under our ‘One Ford’ approach,” says Moray Callum, executive director, Americas Design. “J Mays, Martin Smith and I worked with Freeman and his team to deliver a concept that visually reinforces the fun to drive element that is at the core of the Ford brand DNA.”

The Ford Focus has always been one of the best-handling C-segment cars I’ve ever driven. The biggest drawback it has for the Malaysian market is that it’s a little small on the inside, being an European product where their C-segment cars are a little smaller. Their Civic is a smaller hatch compared to the large 2,700mm wheelbase version we get here.


And here it is, the latest edition of the Focus. Ford pegs it as all-new, and technically it should be considering that the 2nd generation Focus has already been facelifted. So this is basically the third generation and for the first time the Focus is a world car instead of being two different products for North America and the rest of the world. I had a go at the North American product earlier this week and I can understand why American journos have been calling for Ford to bring the Euro Focus across the ocean. Well, they don’t have to do that anymore – they are going to get this new global Focus as well.

The design is far edgier compared to the outgoing Focus. Ford attempted to add some Kinetic Design elements to the current Focus when it got facelifted but because there’s just so much you can change during a facelift, the end result was not as ‘kinetic’ as say, the new Fiesta or the new Ford Kuga. With this new body, Ford has pulled out all the stops with their Kinetic Design – check out details like the ‘zorro Z’ design at the front wheel arch. The ducktail on the sedan’s boot is also pretty prominent. Some might feel it’s perhaps a little too overdone, especially the details of the front bumper. They look like they belong on an aggressive model like an ST or an RS, but these are just your regular Focus models. But this could also be a good thing for some customers – no mods needed.


Wheelbase has unchanged, though the new Focus is a little longer mostly due to pedestrian safety requirements. This means the overhangs are longer. What this will mean is that the interior space is probably largely unchanged over the 2nd generation. Ford says based on their market research this is a good balance between size and fuel economy but to me, for a world car there definitely will be markets where a larger vehicle will be called for. After all, that is why Honda split the CIvic in two. In these markets, certain buyers will look to other vehicles no matter how good the Focus looks simply because of interior space. The new 3rd generation Focus also differentiates between the sedan and the hatchback variant more than the 2nd generation did. The vertical tail lamps are gone on the hatchback in favor of wider rear glass but the tail lamps remain mounted high-ish.

Changes to the platform between the 2nd generation and the 3rd generation mostly covers the way the suspension subframes are mounted. There has been some changes which are primarily driven by the desire to increase the level of NVH damping of the Focus. Thus you can expect the new Ford Focus to feel a little more refined than the outgoing one. Techniques such as the use of sashed doors, dual plane sealing, more aerodynamic wing mirrors and windshield wipers are used. Ford says the new Focus Global C platform shares only about one third with the new Mazda 3, while the rest are exclusively Ford.


Ford wanted the new Focus to be more refined and more quiet, as quiet is one of the factors that we take into account when our brains process the feel of ‘quality’. Quietness is also a big thing for what Ford defines as the new Ford flavor these days – they are investing alot into ways they can make their cars more silent, as I will show you in an upcoming post.

The Detroit showcar features a new 2.0 liter DI Ti-VCT engine. Those acronyms basically mean the engine has direct injection and dual variable valve timing, both on intake and exhaust. This new engine makes up to 20 horses more power than the current Mazda-based Duratec 20, while consuming 10% less fuel. The 4-speed auto has also been replaced by a new 6-speed Powershift dual clutch transmission. Apparently there is also an active grille shutter system, which shuts off some of the air intakes to improve aerodynamics whenever the extra cooling is not needed.


The new Focus will also debut an EPAS system for the first time. EPAS is basically an electric power steering. Alot of other manufacturers have started using EPAS systems in their cars but most people say an electric power steering is more ‘dead’ and unnatural compared to a regular hydraulic one. But Ford believes that a properly tuned EPAS can actually improve steering precision and feel over a hydraulic one.

According to Ford, there are over 250 parameters and settings in an EPAS that has to be finetuned in detail to achieve a good feel. As the 2nd gen Focus was a great drive, I hope Ford got all the variables right! There’s also a Dynamic Cornering Control system which counteracts slip on the inner wheel during a corner to improve cornering performance and turn-in.


Also new is the MyFord system, which is basically like iDrive. You use a phone-style 5-way button on your steering wheel to control the user interface. MyFord is built on Microsoft Windows Auto. Quite a few companies are basing their new in-car systems on Windows Auto, such as Fiat’s Blue&Me and the new system from Kia. There’s also voice commands, so you can say Call Muthu for the phone to call up Muthu in your phonebook. MyFord is the sibling to the touch operation-based MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch showcased at the CES end of last year.

This is one of 10 cars that will spawn from this new “Global C platform”, as Ford calls it. The first was the new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX MPVs which we saw at Frankfurt last year. Ford plans to put the this new third generation global Ford Focus into production for Europe and North America late this year, with a showroom debut in early 2011. It will be quite some time before it hits Malaysia (only early 2012 optimistically), but let me let you in on a secret – we’ll see an interesting new variant of the 2nd gen Focus here soon. This additional variant to the current generation Focus will feature diesel power!
