The automotive industry has been supplying us with employment and transportation since the beginning of the 20th century. The Chevrolet history beginning in 1911 is full of innovation and American spirit. Chevrolet Motor Company started because William Durant had been forced out of General Motors even though he founded the company. America is lucky he chose to start a new automotive company instead of walking away from the industry. From it's first inception Chevrolet has been known for innovation and good design.

In 1918 General Motors bought Chevrolet and made it a separate division of GM. By 1920 Chevrolet was the 3rd most popular car in America. The reputation for innovation and new designs by the engineers of Chevrolet and GM kept the company a major player in the automotive industry to this day. Chevrolet and GM have employed millions of Americans at generous salaries for the better part of a century. Chevrolet made its' first truck in 1918, the $625.00 Superior in 1925, the 1st 6 cylinder engine in 1929, the 30s and 40s brought hydraulic brakes, column shifts, independent front suspension, V grills and the 1st station wagon in 1939.
The convertible coup came in 1940. Chevrolet joined the war effort in 1940 making 75mm shells and other war goods, then after the war resumed making cars with innovation and creativity. The Corvette was introduced in 1953 and is still a classic car favorite. Chevrolet and GM remained a major player in the automotive industry for the rest of the 20th century and into the 21st in spite of foreign car competition, the great depression, WWII and shifting consumer demand.
